about

On ATCQ's "Award Tour," Q-Tip's bassline programming was inspired by Jade's 1992 New Jack classic, "Don't Walk Away." I was shocked when I heard this told as a legend and even more so when I found out it was true. New Jack wasn't always seen in the best light by hardcore Hip-Hop heads back then, so to think that Tip was inspired by Jade was tough to imagine. But samples and inspiration come from everywhere, and I'm completely biased here since "Don't Walk Away" is one of my favorite tracks, but he picked the best New Jack song to be inspired by. It *walks* a fine line between being a Hip Hop and an RnB beat. And makes you want to do the Running Man about 75% less than any Teddy Riley song.

Anyhow, this remake / remix was really just me setting out to prove the hypothesis, and to try to get inside Q-Tip's mind for a while. Initially, It was going to be a simple blend, but one thing led to another while sitting with Ableton, and I ended up remaking all the parts of "Award Tour" from the original samples, replaying basslines to both songs, and then mashed in bits from the Jade instrumental. Through the process, it became eerily clear how much Tip was inspired, and it was more than just the bassline.

For the artwork here, Sean Doe handled the design and illustration - his social media post that inspired me to even do this! And I'm still trying my hand and mixing and mastering and *think* this sounds better than most all my previous attempts. These new Izotope plugins are the biz :) Enjoy!
